We recently saw a tweet come across our learning lab that read, “Reading one good books makes you a lot smarter than skimming over 3,000 RSS feeds. (via @gapingvoid).”

While on the surface this comment makes logical sense and rings true to everything we have always been taught. Beware! Things are changing. Books are by no means the only source of credible information anymore. Relevant and proven learning fragments can also be accessed online. And RSS feeds are just one learning strategy you can engage to make that information come to you.

So, in answer to this tweet we simply state, it depends. Read more…

Just recently we were asked for interviewing tips by two separate individuals. On further review neither had much of a Professional Online Presence (POP). In today’s competitive and technologically savvy world having a POP is essential. There is so much a potential employer can learn about candidates, and so much opportunities for candidates to share about their qualifications and skills. So, think of this short post as a beginners guide to creating an effective POP.

A good place to start would be with LinkedIn. Get as many people as you can, preferably people who you have worked with, to recommend you, and write a positive review. Then join some relevant groups, and enquire about jobs, and look for job postings. Read more…

In the fable of Goldilocks and the Three Bears we learn about a young girl who wants everything “just right.” Throughout the story she is faced with several choices, which she tests and tries, and eventually settles on the choices that are right for her. Does this sound familiar?

This Goldilocks Principle is how people are choosing to learn. With the Learning Explosion taking place all around us we too are faced with an endless array of learning choices. If we want to learn about ferrofluid, we can Google it, view a informative video on YouTube, read a book on it, or attend a live or virtual classroom. Like Goldilocks we can find information that is just right for our specific needs. If we don’t need the entire history of ferrofluid we don’t have to have it force fed to us in a hour long classroom. Read more…

When you are trying to communicate to another person, or group of people — whether it’s in a corporate training situation or in advertising — consider these three key elements to get your point across.

1. Market: You need to know to whom you are speaking. Who are they? What are their interests? What is their background? What are their problems you can solve? Learn as much about them as possible before you even begin to develop your training workshop. You don’t want to get 80% of the way through development and realize you’ve missed the key needs of your learners. Read more…

In a very real sense, this is one way learning is being delivered. Consider Twitter for instance. 140 characters. What can you do with that?
Knowledge not recycled into the common knowledge base is lost forever. What a shame to lose so many learning fragments! You may know something that nobody else knows and there are so many places to share your information. Facebook, YouTube, even Urban Spoon (if you know of a great — or not so great — restaurant).

Listening to Betsey Sparrow from Columbia University who was speaking at Learning 2011, she describes it as “Transactive Memory”.
We can guarantee you’ve said it at least once in your life. Maybe it was said after a complicated project was completed. After a difficult conversation with your boss. After a thorny relationship had ended.

You might say that the most important thing is that you learned something. However, we believe you should go one step further: You need to share that new knowledge with others.

Sharing your experiences allows other people to learn. It’s also how you fortify your knowledge. Life is like a great learning laboratory filled with beakers and vials of ongoing experiments to test your knowledge and to improve your acumen. Read more…

Right now, a teenager in Kobe, Japan, is learning a new skill on his mobile phone. A small-business owner in Sydney, Australia, is asking his professional network of online associates which Learning Management System (LMS) he should buy. A mother in Johannesberg, South Africa, is searching a medical website for how to treat her feverish child. A woman in Copenhagen, Denmark, is sharing information with others around the world through her blog, website, or wiki about a topic she is studying. Instantly, this piece of information—this learning fragment she has created—will generate interest in an online community. It will facilitate discussion. It will fuel new ideas, innovation, and learning. In this way, one learning fragment shared online will continue to explode. This is the Learning Explosion. Read more…

I remember navigating social life on a US University campus without a cell phone, email account, or Facebook profile. Yes, I managed quite well actually. I went on dates, had lots of friends, and managed to contact those friends via traditional methods when necessary. And this was only twelve years ago.

Today, I carry a full fledged computer in my pocket at all times, I am an active tweeter, Facebooker, Yammerer, Blogger, and self-proclaimed online junkie. I am not sure I would cope well to not having a smart phone? Heck, I even do my banking on the precious little thing. As it turns out, I am not the only technical gadget addict. The following week we held one with people from Germany. Then Australia. Then Brazil.

We are perplexed when people talk with us about how they think online learning or e-learning is dramatically inferior to in-person training. “It will never be widely adopted,” they scoff!

In many cases, e-learning has become commoditized and quality does tend to suffer. But we have seen a dramatic shift in technology that allows for the development of high-quality online training. So, when will online learning be categorized as anything other than sub-par?

When Fortune 500 companies embrace it? [click for proof]

When live online instruction can be as engaging as that done live in-person? [click for proof]

When learners choose it over other training methods? [click for proof]

When the most powerful universities embrace it? [click for proof]

We believe the tide has turned and that online learning is quickly becoming recognized as more powerful, more engaging and more accepted than face-to-face instruction.

If you are personally disengaged, diagnose why. Think about yourself as a whole person—body, mind, heart, spirit.

Body: Do I get results? Do I get them in a sustainable way? (e.g., I build trust with others, I am physically and mentally healthy, my personal life is not falling apart).

Heart: Does my work tap into my talents and passions?

Mind: Am I learning and able to use my intelligence and creativity in the majority of my working days?

Spirit: Is there some larger sense of meaning in what I do? The meaning could be found in the impact of your product and service to your community/world or it could be found in how you achieve results and develop people or it could be a simple gut check that says, “This feels right.”

Based on your answers, you have choices. Is there anything you can take responsibility for to impact your engagement? Is there a need in the organization you could fill that could also re-engage you in your work? Before you polish your resume figuring it will be better somewhere else, be sure that you have done everything you can based on where you are on the engagement scale—if the problem lies with you, it will unfortunately follow you to your next employer!

My next blog: What leaders/managers can do to create the conditions for engagement.

Think of posing this question to your people: “How many of you think you possess far more talent, intelligence, capability, and creativity than your present job requires or even allows?” What if the majority answer, “yes?” Does it make a difference to your bottom line results?

It does. Engagement is a function of being a valued member of a team working toward an inspiring goal—tapping into many capabilities on a regular basis. And engaged employees are more productive employees. They work harder, more effectively overcoming barriers to success, and they stay.

Not only that, but work is such a huge part of life—learning who we are, how to get things done in a group; in fact, there is no greater opportunity to develop focus, patience, and empathy than at work—it is just better to have some sense of meaning. Of course, since it is work, there is no meaning without margin!

The problem: 2010 Gallup fund found the number of people self-reporting as actively disengaged went up 21% last year. Deloitte found the 30% were working the job market, ½ would consider leaving.

Three simple suggestions:

1. Fully engage yourself. To ignite the talent and passion of others, you must be fully engaged yourself.

2. Train/coach/evaluate leaders on ability to create conditions for engagement.

3. Teach individuals how to take responsibility for their own engagement and their careers.

My next blogs will focus on detail on these three suggestions!
