Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw®

Helping Students Renew

Dull or rusty tools are much less effective than clean and sharp tools. The same is true for students. This Habit 7 is about helping students preserve and enhance the greatest asset they have to deal with life and contribute to the world—themselves. It’s about balancing the four dimensions of body, heart, mind, and spirit.

As students spend time on each of these four dimensions of self, they create growth and change in their lives. They have the energy and vitality to practice the other six habits. They increase their capacity to persist in their goals and handle the challenges around them.

Without spending regular time on renewal, students will quickly find themselves on the path to burnout, anxiety, and exhaustion.

The Four Human Dimensions

To help students avoid getting overwhelmed about the many aspects of life that require sharpening, we give distill everything down to these four simple dimensions. To achieve balance in their self-care, students must take the necessary time to renew each of them.

Body – Exercising, eating well, getting enough sleep, managing stress

Heart – Investing in their relationships: personal, peer, professor, etc.

Mind – Growing their knowledge and skill. Seeking therapy when needed. Healing from depression, anxiety, and other mental health troubles.

Spirit – Spending time on activities that align with their deepest values

Renewal is the principle—and the process—that empowers us to move on an upward spiral of growth and change, of continuous improvement.
